Poodle Character & Conformation

Poodles are lively, affectionate dogs which make wonderful companions. They have no problem in getting along with older kids, the cat or any other household pet and they thrive on a busy life and being involved in all family matters. They can also be can be good guard dogs, announcing visitors, but will never be aggressive.

Poodles have an innate intelligence and their ability to learn is considered exceptional. They are unusually sensitive to vocal intonation and this is probably one of the reasons why they are so easy to train. Poodles are faster than any other breed at discovering that spoken words mean something and they are thought to understand more spoken words than any other breed. Many Poodle owners believe that poodles actually come close to understanding grammar and whole sentences rather than just single words.

Those people who are fortunate enough to have shared their lives with a poodle are consistent in their opinion that there is no dog so intensely interesting and responsive as a companion. The poodle's qualities of mind and acute powers of reasoning are indeed so great that there is something almost human in his attractiveness and his devotion. His aptitude in learning is never denied and many are the stories told of his marvellous talent and versatility.

There is a general belief that poodles are 'foo-foo' dogs who spend a large majority of their time occupied in personal embellishment, and that this requires a great deal of individual attention. It may be true that to keep a show poodle in exhibition order and perfect cleanliness his owner needs to devote more consideration to him than is necessary in the case of many breeds; but it is also true that a poodle in a regularly maintained pet trim needs no more time in grooming than any other dog of his size.

The down side of a poodle's character is his emotional sensitivity. Be honest...is there tension in your home? Are people loud or angry or emotional? Are there arguments or fights? Poodles are extremely sensitive to stress and can end up literally sick to their stomachs, with digestive upsets and neurotic behaviours, if the people in their home are having family problems. Poodles are peaceful, sensitive dogs who need a peaceful, harmonious home.
